Overview
Better Campus, Better City: Learning for a Sustainable Future
How can the development of cities and urban life be better connected to the sustainable development of University campuses? The ISCN Symposium will serve to explore the pivotal role University campus communities can play in fostering sustainable development of cities and in society at large. Campus communities can serve as role models and living laboratories developing technical and design solutions as well as best practices.
This Symposium, held in conjunction with the Expo 2010 in Shanghai, is jointly organised by the University
of Luxembourg, Tongji University, and the International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN).
The Luxembourg government and Tongji University are providing for the venues in the Luxembourg Expo Pavillion and the main Tongji Campus, respectively. The theme of the ISCN Symposium is intricately linked with the organising theme of the Expo ‘Better City, Better Life’.
The event will distil recommendations for urban and campus development projects from presentations by Member Organisations of the ISCN. Discussions will consider case studies, including from leading Universities, such as Australian National University, Tongji University, and the University of Tokyo. Presentations on the first day are grouped under three topics:
• Planning for sustainable campuses and cities: Creating places of knowledge
• Green buildings and beyond: Technical solutions in the built environment
• Towards resource-efficient communities: Developing best practices and learning
The second day will focus on networking and tools for improved international information exchange, research and development.
The objectives of the Symposium are to
• Identify, report on and disseminate best practices for the sustainable development of campuses
and adjacent urban areas.
• Enable exchange of views and forge connections between research, decision-makers, and policy-makers in the areas of higher education, public construction, and urban planning.
• Extend the reach of the ISCN in Asia.
• Present the ISCN Awards 2010.
The event will be of interest to
• Decision-makers and managers in organisations dedicated to higher education.
• National and regional policy-makers active in the areas of higher education, public construction,
and urban planning, with a focus on campus design, construction and integration.
• Architects involved in conceiving and constructing University buildings and campuses.
